The SMPS Foundation is the only non-profit organization dedicated to identification, research and education of current trends and issues facing marketers and business developers in the A/E/C industry, and I'm proud to have served as its President and even more proud to be a long-time Columbus Chapter member!

The SMPS Foundation brings a variety of resources to help marketers and business developers gain the knowledge, trust and insight to secure and build better client relationships for their firms, as well as to strengthen their own professional reputation. I encourage you to take a look at and use the resources the Foundation offers ... after all the Foundation works for your benefit.

ABOUT THE SMPS FOUNDATION
The Foundation's purpose is to advocate the importance of marketing to the AEC community, to research and document trends, to explore innovative approaches to professional services marketing, and to educate members and others about established practices and evolving concepts in A/E/C marketing.
Since its inception in the mid-1990s, the Foundation has grown into an increasingly effective vehicle for pursuing and achieving these goals.

About four years ago, the Foundation conducted a comprehensive survey of SMPS Fellows, to gain their unique perspectives on the state of the profession now and its anticipated direction in the next 5 - 20 years. The insights and predictions of over forty of SMPS' most highly respected and experienced marketers provided a roadmap to topics the Foundation determined to explore. The following Foundation programs were undertaken to respond to the needs foreseen by the Fellows to help members adapt to changing conditions in the marketplace.

Our "White Paper" series is in its fourth year. We've sponsored the research and commissioned the preparation of comprehensive reports on 27 different topics of special interest to marketers; seven of these are currently in progress and the completed papers were presented at the national conference and are available to all members from the SMPS and Foundation websites.

In 2009, the Foundation launched a new kind of program that proved to be a big success, its "Think Tank" programs on "The Upside of a Down Market" in February, 2009 and on "Breaking Through the Commoditization Barrier and Creating Strategic Advantage" in November, 2009. At both sessions, panels of distinguished industry leaders explored their thoughts and ideas about how to adapt in the current economic environment, in front of an audience of senior SMPS members. There was an active interchange of ideas, and a report on conclusions and recommendations was prepared for release to members. A third program in the series is being planned for October 2010.

In 2009 the Foundation conducted the first update of the nationwide SMPS Salary Survey since it was originally performed in 2000. This in-depth survey focuses on marketing and business development professionals in the A/E/C industry and it provides some exclusive benchmarking data for members at any level within the industry.

At about the same time, a new edition of the Marketing Handbook for the Design and Construction Professional was published by SMPS, with financial support from the Foundation. The Handbook is the backbone of the SMPS certification program, the "bible" of practicing marketers in our specialized profession, and an indispensible reference for experienced and novice practitioners alike. The new edition has been updated to incorporate new technology and expanded to add many new concepts not previously included.

These and other projects of current interest and assistance to SMPS members are conducted by the Foundation, guided by an elected Board of Trustees, and financed entirely by voluntary contributions from SMPS members, their firms, and from SMPS's 59 state and local chapters.
