Recognizing and Honoring Excellence in Marketing and Communications

Much like the National SMPS Marketing Communications Awards Program, the SMPS Columbus program exists to recognize excellence in marketing communications produced by professional services firms in the design and building industry in central Ohio. The competition provides an opportunity for local firms to showcase their hard work and be recognized for it.

Marketing Awards Gala Emcee

Darrin Scott Hunter is the owner of Dish Design, a freelance brand identity design, architectural photography, and corporate training consultancy in Cincinnati focused on the architecture / engineering / construction (AEC) industries. After completing the Bachelor of Architecture program at the University of Cincinnati’s renowned College of Design, Architecture, Art, and Planning (DAAP) in 1997, he joined a large Cincinnati AEC design firm, and his work gradually shifted toward environmental graphics, media design management, and marketing. Ten years later, he completed the Master of Design degree in graphics at DAAP and remained on full-time faculty there for another five years in the Foundations and Graphic Design departments before founding Dish Design in 2012.

Nancy Barcalow, Communications Consultant

Nancy is an expert communications consultant and brand strategist, experienced in managing and promoting corporate events and nonprofit fundraising campaigns.  Among her clients at Mills James, she has established a reputation as an effective leader and a strong communicator. At Mills James, Nancy oversees a client's project from start to finish, combining skills and expertise from Mills James' five different solution centers and acquiring the most cost-effective resources to meet the budget of her clients.  She is able to anticipate and deliver the creative, technical, and financial needs of their projects while building and maintaining strong relationships among her clients.  Prior to joining Mills James, Nancy directed marketing and communications initiatives for Fortune 500 corporations.  Her innovative ability and experience in cross-functional teams led her to later develop and commercialize new consumer products.  Nancy earned a Master of Business Administration from Ohio State University. Nancy serves as the Marketing VP for Women for Economic and Leadership Development (WELD)

Dr. Doug RossDean Franklin University, Global Academic Programs

With a passion for marketing, Dr. Ross has spent his career in a variety of settings, making his mark in both the corporate and academic fields. Through his professional work, teaching, consulting, and speaking engagements, he’s uniquely positioning himself with very versatile experience. He’s also become an internationally known speaker, making presentations on a variety of topics. He has been recognized with awards from the AMA, PRSA, EWI, and Franklin University for his contributions to teaching and the field of marketing. Dr. Ross holds a Ph.D. in Marketing from New Mexico State University.
